Hydraulic Press Uses in Industry – How to Choose the Right Tonnage

By Venkatesh Tandel, Automation Solution Engineering · Bangalore · 2026

A hydraulic press is one of the most versatile and powerful machines on the factory floor. It uses pressurised hydraulic fluid to generate controlled force — from a few tonnes to hundreds of tonnes — that can press, form, stamp, bend, punch, or assemble components with high precision and repeatability. At ASE, we manufacture hydraulic presses from 5 tonnes to 500 tonnes for a wide range of industrial applications.

Common Industrial Uses of Hydraulic Presses

How to Choose the Right Tonnage

The most common question we get from customers is: "How many tonnes do I need?" The answer depends on three factors — the material being pressed, the contact area, and the required deformation or insertion force.

Rule of thumb: Add 30–40% safety margin over your calculated required force. If your process needs 60 tonnes, choose an 80–100 tonne press for consistent, safe operation without stressing the machine.

C-Frame vs H-Frame Hydraulic Press

C-frame presses (also called gap-frame presses) offer three-sided open access, making them ideal for loading and unloading components easily. They are commonly used for bearing pressing and small component assembly. H-frame presses (four-column presses) offer a larger bed area and greater rigidity, making them suitable for heavy forming, straightening, and industrial production use.

At ASE, we manufacture both types and can also build custom press configurations — including hydraulic press cells integrated into SPM production lines.
