One of the most common questions from manufacturers is: "Should I buy a pneumatic press or a hydraulic press?" Both are pressing machines, but they operate differently and suit different applications. After 15 years of manufacturing both types, here is a clear comparison to help you decide.
How They Work
A pneumatic press uses compressed air (typically at 6–8 bar plant air) to drive a piston and generate downward force. A hydraulic press uses pressurised oil in a hydraulic circuit to generate force, controlled through valves and a hydraulic power pack.

When to Choose a Pneumatic Press
- You need fast cycle times (under 3 seconds per stroke)
- The required force is under 5–8 tonnes
- You are pressing small components, labels, rivets, or connectors
- Your factory already has a reliable compressed air supply
- You want a simple, low-maintenance solution
When to Choose a Hydraulic Press
- The required force is above 10 tonnes
- You need precise control over pressing force and stroke speed
- The application involves deep drawing, rubber moulding, or bearing press-fit
- You need to hold pressure at a set point for a specific duration
