What is a Special Purpose Machine (SPM)? Complete Guide for Indian Manufacturers

By Venkatesh Tandel, Automation Solution Engineering · Bangalore · 2026

A Special Purpose Machine (SPM) is a custom-designed and custom-built industrial machine that is engineered to perform one or more specific manufacturing operations that standard off-the-shelf machines cannot efficiently handle. Unlike general-purpose machines such as lathes or drilling machines, an SPM is built exclusively for a specific task — whether that is pressing, assembly, testing, welding, riveting, or a combination of operations on a production line.

Why Do Manufacturers Need SPM Machines?

Standard machines are designed for flexibility and broad use. But in high-volume production environments, flexibility often comes at the cost of speed, precision, and efficiency. An SPM eliminates that compromise by being purpose-built for one job, done repeatedly and perfectly.

Example: An automotive component manufacturer in Pune needed a machine to press-fit bearings into housings at a rate of 600 units per hour with ±0.02mm precision. No standard machine could do this. An SPM was designed with a custom hydraulic pressing station, automatic feeding, and a vision-based rejection system — achieving exactly that output.

Common Types of SPM Machines We Build at ASE

SPM Machine Design Process at ASE

At Automation Solution Engineering, every SPM project begins with a detailed study of the customer's production requirement. We assess the component drawing, required cycle time, production volume, and quality parameters before proposing a solution. Our 15-year experience allows us to design machines that are robust, low-maintenance, and easy for factory operators to run.

Where Are ASE SPM Machines Used?

Our SPM machines are installed in factories across Bangalore, Goa, Pune, Mumbai, Karwar, and Hubli. Industries we serve include automotive, abrasives, rubber products, plastics, electrical components, and general engineering.

If your production line has a repetitive task that is slowing you down or costing you quality, an SPM is almost certainly the answer. Contact us for a free consultation.
