The first question most buyers ask is the price of an SPM. The honest answer is that a special purpose machine is not a catalogue product, so the cost follows the design. This guide explains what actually decides the price, so you can compare quotations properly and decide where to spend and where to save.

| Factor | Why it affects cost |
|---|---|
| Number of stations and operations | Every extra station adds frame, fixtures, actuators and programming. A single press-fit station costs far less than an assembly line with several. |
| Level of automation | Manual loading with automatic operation is the simplest. Automatic feeding, part transfer and unloading add mechanisms, sensors and control logic. |
| Drive type | Pneumatic is usually the simplest. Hydraulic gives higher force. Servo drives give precise position and force control but cost more. |
| Control system | A basic PLC, a PLC with HMI, and a system with SCADA or data logging are different levels of engineering and hardware. |
| Sensors and inspection | Presence sensors are cheap. Load cells, encoders, leak test controllers and vision systems add real cost but also quality. |
| Cycle time and output | A higher parts per hour target needs faster actuators, stiffer structure and often multiple cavities. |
| Tooling and fixtures | Part specific fixtures, dies and clamps are custom made. Difficult or delicate parts need more design time. |
| Component brands | PLC, drives, valves and cylinders from different brands have different prices and different spares availability. |
| Safety features | Guarding, light curtains, two hand controls and emergency stop circuits are needed for safe operation. |
| Trial, installation and training | Factory trial with your parts, transport, on-site commissioning and operator training are part of a complete project. |
Two quotations for the same part can differ a lot because one may leave out safety, sensors, fixtures for a second variant or a proper trial run. Ask each supplier to list what is included: control brand, drive type, sensors, guarding, fixtures, spares, drawings, trial and installation. A machine that stops production every week costs more than one that was priced properly at the start.
Automation Solution Engineering builds custom SPM machines in Ankola, Karnataka and delivers them to factories in Bangalore, Goa, Karwar, Pune and Mumbai. Read how we approach a project in the complete SPM guide.
There is no fixed price because every special purpose machine is built for a specific part and process. The cost depends mainly on the number of stations, level of automation, drive type, controls, sensors and the required output. A manual load pneumatic station and a fully automatic multi-station line are very different projects, so a price is only possible after the requirement is studied.
Give a clear specification, avoid features you do not need, start with semi-automatic loading if volumes allow, use standard components where possible and keep the part design stable. Phasing automation, for example adding vision or a feeder later, can also spread the investment.
