The control panel is the brain of any automatic machine. It holds the PLC, power supplies, relays or contactors, drives and protection devices that make the machine run safely and repeatably. This guide explains what is inside a PLC and HMI control panel, how it is designed and what to define before ordering. It complements our MCC, PCC and VFD panels guide and the electrical panels page.

A programmable logic controller (PLC) is an industrial computer that reads inputs such as sensors and switches, runs a program and controls outputs such as valves, motors and indicators. It is built for factory conditions and continuous running.
A human machine interface (HMI) is a touch screen or display where operators select modes, enter settings, see counts and alarms and read results. A good HMI shows clear messages so faults are found quickly.
| Component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Incoming isolator and MCB / MCCB | Switches the panel and protects against overload and short circuit |
| SMPS (24 V DC power supply) | Powers PLC, sensors and solenoid valves |
| PLC with input and output modules | Runs the machine logic |
| Contactors and overload relays | Start and protect motors |
| VFD (variable frequency drive) | Controls motor speed, such as conveyors |
| Servo drives | Position and speed control for servo axes |
| Relays and terminal blocks | Interface signals and give tidy wiring |
| Safety relay and emergency stop | Safe stopping and guard monitoring |
| Push buttons, selector switches, indicator lamps | Operator controls on the door |
| Cooling fan or AC, filters | Keeps temperature in limits |
Emergency stop, guard door interlocks, light curtains and safety relays protect operators. The safety circuit should work independently of normal control logic and be tested regularly.
Automation Solution Engineering builds PLC and HMI control panels, MCC, PCC, VFD and APFC panels along with its machines and conveyors, so the machine and panel are designed together. Panels can also be supplied separately for your own machines. Share your machine details and I/O list for a quotation. See also SPM machine types.
A PLC reads sensor and switch inputs, runs a stored program and controls outputs such as valves, motors and indicators. It automates machine sequences reliably and repeatably.
The PLC runs the logic of the machine. The HMI is the screen where the operator selects modes, enters settings and sees alarms, counts and results.
A VFD controls motor speed, which allows smooth start and stop, adjustable conveyor or spindle speed and energy saving.
